Planning a Spring Landscape Build Over the Winter: The Halton Region Timeline

The single most common reason a Halton homeowner does not get the backyard they wanted in a given summer is that they called in April. Not because the design was wrong or the budget was short, but because the calendar had already run out. The work that makes a spring build possible happens between November and March.

What actually happens over the winter

  • Site assessment, elevations and an accurate measure-up of the property

  • Concept design, layout and revisions with you until it is right

  • Material selection: Techo-Bloc lines, natural stone, coping and finishes

  • Engineering where retaining walls, structures or grade changes require it

  • Municipal pool enclosure permit application where a pool is involved

  • Conservation Halton approval where any part of the property sits in a regulated area

  • Utility locates, scheduling and ordering of long-lead materials

The permit timeline is the real reason to start early

In Ontario a pool enclosure permit is required before a pool is installed, and it is issued by the municipality. Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Hamilton each run their own process with their own fencing and gate requirements. An application submitted in February moves through at a sensible pace. An application submitted in May joins the queue behind everyone else who waited until spring.

If any part of the property sits near a creek, a valley slope or a regulated hazard area, approval from Conservation Halton may also be required, and that runs on its own separate timeline. None of this is difficult. It is simply sequential, and it does not compress no matter how motivated everybody is.

Winter is when the season's calendar fills

Landscape construction in this region effectively runs from ground-thaw in spring to freeze-up in late fall. Every established builder's calendar for that window fills over the winter. If you want work executed in a particular summer, the decision that makes it happen is made the winter before.

We are direct about our own schedule when you call. If we cannot deliver in the window you have in mind, we will tell you that before you invest time in a design, rather than after.

What helps us start

  • A survey or site plan if you have one from your purchase documents

  • Photos of the problem areas, and of spaces elsewhere that you like

  • A realistic budget range, which lets us design something buildable instead of something to be cut apart later

  • How you actually use the yard: entertaining, children, dogs, swimming, quiet

  • Any hard timing constraints, such as an event or a planned house renovation

Why homeowners choose Greer

Greer Landscaping & Construction Corp. has spent more than 20 years building luxury landscapes across Halton Region, and we handle project management as part of the work rather than as an extra. Winter planning questions from Halton homeowners

Can design work happen in winter, or do you need to see the site without snow?

We would rather do the site assessment and measure-up before snow cover, which is exactly why October and November calls are ideal. Once accurate grades and dimensions are captured, the design and material selection work proceeds comfortably indoors through the winter. If you call in January we can still begin; we may just need a clear day to take reliable elevations.

Does a landscape or pool project need a building permit in Burlington?

A pool enclosure permit is required for a pool. Beyond that it depends on scope: retaining walls above a certain height, decks above a certain height and roofed structures typically require permits, and the thresholds differ between municipalities. We identify what your specific project triggers during design, rather than discovering it mid-construction.

How far ahead should I call for a summer pool build?

For a complete poolscape, meaning excavation, pool, deck, drainage and planting, the winter before is not early. It is normal. Design, permitting, engineering and material lead times routinely consume three to five months before a machine arrives on site.
